So Krisa made sure she was already snuggled up, firmly on her own side of the grass mat bed with the furs tucked under her chin when she asked her question about his past.
He didn’t answer so she prompted, “Teague?”
“What do you want to know?” he said at last, his back still to her. “You decent?”
Krisa nodded and then realized he couldn’t see the gesture. “Yes, you can turn around now.”
Teague turned, shedding his own clothes carelessly on the floor as he did. Now that they were out of the jungle, he stripped before he went to sleep, which made the practical little voice inside Krisa’s head doubly nervous. She had protested this practice at first, but Teague had replied shortly that he refused to be uncomfortable just to satisfy her ridiculous ideas about modesty and impropriety.
The gray-green vest lay on the floor already and as the black trousers came down, Krisa turned and blew out the flame of the fat little clay lamp, plunging the hut into darkness. She told herself she was trying not to look, but she still caught a brief glimpse of the heavy, dark shadow of his cock between his thighs, before everything went dark. Her habit of blowing out the light before he could get completely naked had amused Teague at first, but now he didn’t bother to comment.
“I just want to know why you said what you said—about killing for necessity, not for pleasure. What you told me that first night we talked in the Star Princess was a lot different.”
Teague sighed heavily and slid into the grass mat bed beside her. Krisa made sure she kept to her own side but even so, she could feel the heat radiating from his big body.
“How is what I told him and what I told you different?” he demanded, turning on his side to stare at her, silver eyes glowing softly in the darkness.
“Well, it’s a lot different,” Krisa said indignantly. “When we talked you acted like killing people was no big deal to you—a way of life, you said. But when you talked to Ziba, when you calmed him down, you acted like it—I don’t know—almost like it bothered you.”
Teague sighed again. “No, I told you that doing what you have to in order to survive gets to be a way of life. For me, unfortunately, that happens to involve a lot of killing. You don’t break out of the slam by sayin’ please and thank you, sweetheart. It’s a messy, ugly thing sometimes, trying to keep your freedom.” The silver eyes looked thoughtful. “But every time I killed it was because I had to. What I was telling Ziba is that you shouldn’t kill just for the fun of it.”
“B-but you told him you did kill for pleasure. Once—the first time. Tell me about that,” Krisa whispered, wondering if she really wanted to know. She felt like a child asking to be told a ghost story right before bedtime, but she couldn’t seem to help herself.
